Late 2019, Brewerkz introduced CANNEDVAS: Beer Label Design Competition, calling for local students to submit their designs for Brewerkz’s core craft beers: the Golden Ale, India Pale Ale, Bohemian Pilsner and Oatmeal Stout.
The beloved Singapore craft beer brand aims to #SupportLocal by working with students and creating the opportunity for them to showcase their work to the world. The winning entry stands to receive a grand prize of SGD 2,500, while three merit winners walk away with a participation prize of SGD 500 each. The criteria for the competition is simple: create designs that embody four key themes: Craft, Originality, Impact, and Uniquely Singapore.
With an overwhelming response of over 70 sets of submissions, Brewerkz carefully shortlisted nine designs that best represented the homegrown brand’s image and adhered to the competition criteria closely. These nine designs were then listed on the Brewerkz CANNEDVAS page for public voting which attracted more than a thousand votes from craft beer fans and lovers of art. With a total of 318 votes, Jean David Reboca of ITE Central, whose design featured an intricately illustrated lion’s head, paying homage to the iconic Singapore Merlion, emerged the winner. Embellished with motifs of hops, wheat, and water, this label perfectly encapsulates the Brewerkz spirit: brave, original, and homegrown. Of the three merit winners, Vanessa Hon of Nanyang Technological University stood out with her creative caricatures of the Merlion bearing iconic Singaporean traits: the Atas Chiobu, the Baotoh Kia, the Garang Kia, and the Lobang King.
“We conceived CANNEDVAS to give local student artists a platform to showcase their design talents; taking it a step further by producing these limited-edition cans so as to share their work with the public. We are very pleased with the level of participation, the quality of the designs submitted, as well as the reaction from the public as seen by the votes. This is something we are looking to repeat and expand on in the future,” says Tan Wee Tuck, Executive Director of Brewerkz.
The Art X Craft Collection of canned beers will launch August 2020 at all Brewerkz outlets and e-store and will be progressively available at leading supermarket stores islandwide.
